HC Deb 25 February 1993 vol 219 c704W
Mr. John Marshall

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many firms have been helped under the business start-up scheme in each of the last five years; and how many are still in business.

Mr. McLoughlin

The number of individuals who started a new business under the scheme in each of the last five years is given in the table. These figures do not equate exactly to the number of businesses started, since for some businesses more than one individual will have been supported.

Business Start-Up Scheme Entrants
Year Number
1987–88 106,300
1988–89 98,500
1989–90 77,900
1990–91 60,300
1991–92 50,400

Information is not available on how many are still in business.
