To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what effect the European Commission proposals on the transport of live animals are expected to have on maintaining the United Kingdom transportation of live animals regulations.

Directive 91/628/EEC on the protection of animals during transport sets a framework of controls which are to be supplemented by additional Community rules. Commission proposals for these additional rules are still awaited. In the meantime the directive permits national measures to apply in the relevant areas. Such measures are contained in the Welfare of Animals During Transport Order 1992 which came into force on 1 January 1993.
