To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the net farm income for sheep and sheep and cattle farms in severely disadvantaged areas, in both nominal and real terms, for each year since 1978.

[holding answer 4 February 1993]: Estimates of net farm income based on results of sample surveys are provided in the following table. Indices are shown in the table based on results from constant samples of farms to allow reliable year to year comparisons.

2. The levels of income have been rounded to the nearest hundred.

3. In 1983–84 the lower size limit for farms in the sample was reduced therefore the figures in 1983–84 and later are not fully comparable with earlier years.
