HL Deb 11 February 1993 vol 542 cc56-60WA
Lord Colwyn

asked Her Majesty's Government:

As a total and by health authority region, how many NHS hospitals in the United Kingdom have a cardiology department and how many offer bypass surgery and angioplasty as a treatment for coronary artery disease, indicating how many of these hospitals have trust status; and

How many people in the United Kingdom, in total and in each health authority region, are waiting for coronary artery bypass grafts and/or balloon angioplasties on the NHS, what is the average length of time on the waiting list for these procedures in each area, and how many of these patients die before they are able to be treated; and

How many people in the United Kingdom and in each health authority region have received either coronary artery bypass graft or angioplasty for coronary artery disease in the past 15 years, what was the cost of carrying out these operations in each of these years, and what is the average life expectancy of patients who have received these operations.

Baroness Cumberlege

Complete information is not held centrally in the form requested. The number of NHS hospitals with cardiology departments is not recorded centrally but, according to the returns of the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons, there are 41 hospitals in the UK with cardiac surgery units, all of them able to perform coronary artery bypass grafts. Angioplasty can be performed at most of these hospitals, and also at hospitals that have cardiology but not cardiac surgery units.

The numbers of people awaiting specific treatments are not recorded centrally but the numbers of people awaiting cardiology and cardiac surgery in England are shown in the tables. Figures for the cardiac speciality in Wales are published in the Welsh Hospital Waiting List Bulletin 1992 No. 2, which is available in the Library. In Scotland there were 1,244 people awaiting cardiology and 915 awaiting cardiac surgery in September 1992. In Northern Ireland there were 874 people awaiting cardiac surgery in September 1992.

Average waiting times are not recorded centrally but 90 per cent. of cardiothoracic patients are treated within a year. There are no figures to show how many patients die before receiving such treatment.

Numbers of coronary artery bypass grafts (CABGs) performed in the UK from 1978 to 1987 according to the returns of the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons are shown below. No figures are held centrally for angioplasties performed in this period. The only year for which figures are held on an English regional basis is 1989/90; details are shown below. In Northern Ireland there were 318 CABGs and 287 angioplasties in 1989/90. In Wales there were 241 CABGs and 125 angioplasties in 1989; in 1990 the figures were 253 and 245 respectively. In Scotland there were 1,580 CABGs and 460 angioplasties in 1989; in 1990 the figures were 1,689 and 525 respectively. Information on the costs of these procedures and average life expectancy (both of which would vary considerably depending on the condition of the patient) is not held centrally. It is estimated that in 1990–91 14,543 patients in the UK received CABGs.
