HC Deb 10 February 1993 vol 218 cc678-9W
37. Mr. Lester

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on Her Majesty's Government's policy towards Angola.

39. Mr. Mandelson

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what steps he is taking through the international community to end the violence in Angola.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The Government supported Security Council resolution 804 and will continue to support the efforts of the United Nations to promote dialogue between the Government of Angola and UNITA with a view to agreeing a ceasefire and full implementation of the Bicesse peace agreements. We therefore welcome the meeting, held under UN auspices, at Addis Ababa last month between the two parties and hope that this will be followed by further dialogue.

Mr. Thurnham

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs further to his answer of 1 February,Official Report, column 30, what further action he is taking to secure the release of three British citizens held by UNITA forces in Angola; what joint action he proposes with other governments with citizens similarly held; whether this issue will be raised at the UNITA/government talks in Addis Ababa; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

[holding answer 9 February 1993]: Since first hearing of the detention of three British citizens by UNITA in Angola, we have made strong representations to UNITA for their release. I am pleased to say that all three were released on 7 February together with a number of other foreign detainees, and have now left Angola.
