HC Deb 09 February 1993 vol 218 cc595-6W
Miss Lestor

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security if he will estimate the number of children conceived by AID who will be entitled to maintenance from their biological father.

Mr. Burt

Where a donation of sperm is made to a licensed treatment centre, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 safeguards the donor's identity. Consequently, where a child is born as a result of artificial insemination by donor, the question of seeking maintenance from the biological father will arise only where the donation is made by private arrangement without the services of a licensed treatment centre. There is no centrally available information on the numbers that might be involved.
