HC Deb 08 February 1993 vol 218 cc511-2W
Mr. Maclennan

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list by name the environmentally sensitive areas currently designated in Scotland, and in respect of each, state the area covered, the payment per hectare and the total annual payments which have been made each year since their introduction.

Sir Hector Monro

The environmentally sensitive areas in Scotland are listed in the table, together with details of the areas covered by each designation and the annual payments made since the schemes were introduced. In each area there is a range of hectarage payments reflecting the different levels of environmental management which participants in the scheme agree to undertake. Details are set out in the relevant statutory instruments and in the published scheme literature.

Sir Hector Monro

Six licences to shoot barnacle geese and three to shoot Greenland white-fronted geese were issued in November 1992 prior to commencement of the Islay goose management scheme. Four barnacle licences and two white-front licences were subsequently revoked upon the decision of the licence holders to participate in the management scheme.

I am encouraged by the rate of voluntary participation in the scheme. I am also content that those not participating should continue to be able to seek licences to protect their crops.
