To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will list the names of contraceptive pills, coils, diaphragms and spermicides available free on prescription and the number of prescriptions for each named item given by general practitioners in the last year.

To release data on the number of prescriptions issued by general practitioners for each named drug would indicate the trading position, and could affect the business, of the manufacturers concerned. It is therefore treated as commercial in confidence. However, the numbers of prescriptions issued in England in 1991 for contraceptives as indicated in the "British National Formulary" chapter 7.3 was 7.7 million. The figures for 1992 are not yet available. The remaining information requested is in the table.
