Whether increases in the salaries of senior officials of the water companies will be limited to the 1.5 per cent. set for the National Health Service personnel.

The remuneration of directors and senior managers of the privatised water companies is a matter for the companies and their shareholders. However, we have made it clear that directors of companies need to exercise leadership and restraint in respect of the rate at which salary levels are increased.
