HC Deb 02 February 1993 vol 218 cc109-10W
Mr. Bottomley

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage if he will make it his policy to set the regime for tax and money for good causes for the national lottery so that the combined total is the same as that for the football pools; and if he will estimate the total of tax and money for other good causes from football pools.

Mr. Brooke

Taxation regimes are a matter for the Chancellor. The amount of pool betting duty paid in 1991–92 was £319.46 million. The pools companies contributed over £20 million to the Football Trust in 1991–92, following the reduction of 2.5 per cent. in pool betting duty introduced in the 1990 Budget. A further reduction of 2.5 per cent. in the 1991 Budget, combined with the 5p levy on every £1 staked by players, yielded over £60 million for the Foundation for Sport and the Arts in the same year.
