§ Mr. HarveyTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what plans he has to review the whole area of marine pollution control, as recommended by the second report of the Environment Committee of 1991–92 (HC17) on coastal zone protection and planning, in the light of the grounding of the supertanker MV Braer.
§ Mr. MacleanThe Government response (CM 2011 July 1992) to the Environment Committee report stressed the need for different agencies to deal with various marine pollution control functions and pointed to their good record of close co-operation, particularly over oil and chemical pollution from ships. Lord Donaldson's inquiry will no doubt be considering whether the MV Braer incident should lead to any changes in these views.
