§ Mr. MeacherTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what policy initiatives he is planning to undertake in the next six months to promote international co-operation and development; what meetings he is planning to attend; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Nelson[holding answer 29 January 1993]: Over the next six months, my right hon. Friend will continue to work to strengthen international co-operation, in particular with EC and G7 colleagues. He will continue to press for a satisfactory conclusion to the GATT Uruguay 97W round and to seek to improve the terms of debt relief available to the poorest countries. In the EC, my right hon. Friend will press for progress in implementing the package of measures agreed at the Edinburgh summit to promote economic recovery and in making the single market work effectively. With G7 colleagues he will be working to reduce obstacles to sustainable growth and hence foster employment. My right hon. Friend plans to attend meetings with EC colleagues as well as the EBRD annual meeting in London, the G7/IMF/World Bank meetings in Washington and the Economic summit in Tokyo.
