Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland when his Department was informed of the leakage of radioactive liquor at the Atomic Energy Authority's Dounreay nuclear power development establishment on 21 November 1992; what off-site contamination resulted from the leakage; and how many such incidents have been brought to the attention of his Department since 1988.

Mr. Stewart

[holding answer 20 January 1993]: A report of this incident was made to my Department on 26 November 1992. No off-site contamination occurred; radioactivity was confined within the immediate plant area.

Since 1988, four incidents involving radioactive liquor have been reported to my Department from civil nuclear installations in Scotland.
