§ Mr. PickthallTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on aid to Sierra Leone.
§ Mr. Lennox-Boyd[holding answer 29 January 1993]: My right hon. Friend the Foreign Secretary announced in Abuja (Nigeria) on 5 January 1993 that in response to the summary execution of at least 26 alleged coup-plotters on 29–30 December we would suspend all new aid to Sierra Leone, withdraw our existing offer of £4 million in balance of payments support and consider what further measures might be taken, for example, on the future of existing projects.
Our emergency relief aid, to help those displaced in the region as a result of the Liberian and Sierra Leonean crises, will continue.
