§ Mr. MeacherTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what policy initiatives he is planning to undertake in the next six months to promote international development and co-operation; what meetings he is planning to attend; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Lennox-Boyd[holding answer 29 January 1993]: We shall continue our efforts to promote international co-operation and sustainable economic and social development, and to reduce poverty. With our European Community colleagues we shall undertake further work on improving the co-ordination of European Community development policy, as agreed at last November's Development Council.
We are working for effective follow-up to the United Nations conference on the environment and development last June, including the first meeting of the Sustainable Development Commission this summer. We shall continue to press for a satisfactory conclusion to the GATT Uruguay round. We shall also work for resolution of conflicts and the relief of suffering, particularly in Somalia and the former republics of Yugoslavia.
My right hon. Friend the Foreign Secretary and my noble Friend the Minister for Overseas Development plan to attend meetings with European Community, G7 and developing country partners, including the economic summit in Tokyo.
