HL Deb 17 December 1993 vol 550 cc154-5WA
Lord Stoddart of Swindon

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How the Prime Minister's vision of a competitive wider European Union of sovereign states espoused in his article in the Economist of 25th September 1993 can be reconciled with the statement by the Chancellor of the Exchequer at the CBI Conference in November that he was in favour of full economic and monetary union including a single currency.

The Earl of Caithness

There is no contradiction between the Government's policy on economic and monetary union and its wish to see an enlarged Community of sovereign member states.
