HC Deb 17 December 1993 vol 234 c987W
Mr. Simon Hughes

To ask the President of the Board of Trade who is responsible for the security vetting of staff at BNFL; and what special precautions are taken for staff who have access to plutonium.

Mr. Eggar

[holding answer 16 December 1993]: Security vetting of British Nuclear Fuels employees is the responsibility of the security directorate of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority which, in co-operation with British Nuclear Fuels, ensures employees are vetted in a manner appropriate to the nature of their work in accordance with Government policy. All plutonium is protected by appropriate security arrangements and is subject to strict conditions of nuclear materials accountancy and control.
