HC Deb 16 December 1993 vol 234 c912W
Dr. David Clark

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will publish a declassified statement of the future training requirements of 19 Mechanised Brigade.

Mr. Hanley

19 Mechanised Brigade will conduct its future training in field training exerciseFTX—and command field exercise—CFX-modes on Salisbury plain training area—SPTA—with low-level individual and collective training carried out on local training areas.

FTX aims to practice all elements of a formation, unit and sub-unit under as realistic conditions as possible and CFX training is a mode of exercising whereby command, control and communication elements deploy, but only selected formations do so in full strength. It combines the aims of FTX with command post exercise—CPX—whereby enemy and/or friendly forces are generated, displayed and moved by electronic or other means on computers, simulators or other training devices. The purpose of the CPX is to practice headquarters staffs at all levels in a realistic way which does not involve manoeuvre elements.

In addition, 19 Mechanised Brigade will also conduct its armoured/mechanised battle group training at the British Army training unit, Suffield—Canada.
