HC Deb 09 December 1993 vol 234 c306W
Mr. Nicholas Brown

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total yield from VAT in 1978–79.

Sir John Cope

The yield from VAT in the financial year 1978–79 was £4,837.5 million.

Mr. Nicholas Brown

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer by how much he estimates the average family's tax bill will rise following the VAT changes outlined in the March 1993 Budget.

Sir John Cope

Standard rate VAT on domestic fuel and power applied to the average household's existing fuel bill would cost about £2.30 a week.

Mr. Nicholas Brown

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the proportion of consumer spending subject to the standard rate of VAT, exempt from VAT and subject to a zero rate of VAT.

Sir John Cope

The latest data show that some 58 per cent. of consumer spending is standard rated, 24 per cent. is exempt and 18 per cent. is subject to a zero rate of VAT.
