§ Mr. Nicholas Brown
To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what are the latest figures for how many(a) working and (b) non-working people do not pay tax in the United Kingdom.

§ Mr. Dorrell
Of the estimated 21 million people aged 16 or over who are non-taxpayers in 1993–94 about 3.6 million are working and 17.4 million are non-working.

§ Mr. Nicholas Brown
To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many single people and married couples do not currently pay tax.

§ Mr. Dorrell
It is estimated that in 1993–94 there are about 8.9 million single people aged over 16 not liable to income tax and about 3.8 million married couples where neither spouse is liable to tax.
