HL Deb 09 December 1993 vol 550 c81WA
Lord Stoddart of Swindon

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How much revenue was received from tobacco taxes in 1992–93, and what proportion of NHS expenditure such taxes represented.

The Minister of State, Department of Transport (The Earl of Caithness)

In 1992–93, an estimated £7,561 million was received from tobacco duty receipts and VAT on consumers' expenditure on tobacco products. This amount is equivalent to 21 per cent. of total NHS expenditure in the UK.
