HL Deb 08 December 1993 vol 550 c76WA
Lord Tebbit

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will list the "worst bits" of the Maastricht Treaty of Union to which the Chancellor of the Exchequer referred in his broadcast on the "Today" programme, BBC Radio 4, on 2 August 1993.

The Minister of State, Department of Transport (The Earl of Caithness)

The Chancellor of the Exchequer was referring to the timetable in the Maastricht Treaty relating to the third stage of economic and monetary union. He was drawing attention to the fact that the UK protocol to the Treaty guarantees that Parliament can decide at the appropriate time whether, and if so when, to seek to move into Stage 3 of EMU.
