To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will make a statement on the deregulation of private care and nursing homes.

Mr. Bowis

The Government are committed to ensuring that the interests of residents of residential care and nursing homes are protected and that they receive the care they need in well-run homes.

We have no doubt that regulation to underpin this objective will continue to be necessary, but we are seeking to remove unnecessary controls and to improve the way in which essential regulation is applied and enforced. Any proposed changes would be subject to consultation.
