To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many deaths there were in(a) the first and (b) third quarter of 1992 for (i) Britain and (ii) the Northern region.

Mr. Bowls

In the quarter to March 1992, there were 156,060 deaths in England and Wales of which 10,583 occurred in the northern region. The comparative figures for the September quarter were 125,301 deaths and 8,246 deaths respectively.
