HC Deb 06 December 1993 vol 234 cc88-9W
Mr. Galbraith

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will ask Greater Glasgow health board to consider which of its patients could be transferred to general surgical care under the Canniesburn hospital waiting list initiative.

Mr. Stewart

[holding answer 1 December 1993]: No. All the patients for whom treatment has been secured under the initiative involving the Bon Secours Health System, Glasgow have been asked by Greater Glasgow health board if they are willing to receive treatment in the private sector. Those who have indicated that they do not wish to be treated in the private sector have already been offered treatment at Canniesburn hospital.

Mr. Galbraith

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give for Greater Glasgow health board the number of patients under the Canniesburn hospital waiting list initative who have agreed to surgery in(a) the private sector within the west of Scotland, (b) the private sector within Scotland outwith the west of Scotland, (c) the private sector in England, (d) the NHS in Scotland, excluding the west of Scotland and (e) the NHS in England; and if he will also give the cost in each category for (i) the operation and escort and (ii) accommodation.

Mr. Stewart

[holding answer 1 December 1993]: There are two waiting list initiatives which Greater Glasgow health board has been leading on behalf of other, predominantly west of Scotland, health boards which are designed to secure treatment for a number of long wait plastic surgery patients.

The first initiative is to secure treatment for 800 patients at Canniesburn hospital where an additional consultant plastic surgeon has been recruited.

The second initiative has taken the form of a contract award, following a full competitive tendering exercise, to the Bon Secours Health System, Glasgow. Under the terms of the contract up to 572 patients are being offered treatment. To date, 23 have indicated that they do not wish to be treated under this initiative. These patients have been offered treatment under the initiative at Canniesburn hospital.

The contract with Bon Secours will cost around £500,000. This covers pre-operative assessment, treatment, accommodation and all necessary follow-up work for a mix of major, intermediate and minor procedures.
