Mr. Chris Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement regarding the expected environmental impact of the proposed World bank-funded Arun II dam project in Nepal.

I refer the hon. Member to the reply given by my hon. Friend the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs to the hon. Member for Southampton, Itchen (Mr. Denham) on 29 November, at columns313-14.

The World bank's ongoing discussions with non-governmental organisations and other interested parties include consideration of the environmental impact of the proposed project. We shall consider the environmental aspects of the project when the World bank has completed its appraisal.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will list all bilateral aid projects located in the Arun valley of Nepal.

The following United Kingdom bilateral aid projects are located in the Arun Valley of Nepal:

  1. 1. Pakhribas agricultural centre;
  2. 2. Koshi hills seeds and vegetable project;
  3. 3. Community forestry project;
  4. 4. Eastern region road maintenance project; and
  5. 5. Eastern region primary health care project.
In addition, some work is carried out in the Arun valley under the forestry research project and the Gurkha Welfare Trust scheme.
