The Minister of State, Home Office (Earl Ferrers)

Responsibility for the subject of this Question has been delegated to the Prison Service and its Director General, Mr. Derek Lewis. The Director General has therefore responded to the Question and his letter is given below.

Letter from Mr. Derek Lewis, Director General of the Prison Service, to Lord Avebury, dated 1st December 1993

Lord Ferrers has asked me to reply to your recent Question about people employed in the Prison Service.

On 31 October 1993, 37,920 staff were on the Prison Service payroll. The budget for pay and related expenditure in 1993–94 is £855.2 million.

The Prison Service became an Agency on 1 April 1993. The average number of staff in post in 1992–93 was 37,670 and expenditure on pay and related matters was £842 million. The latter figure has been adjusted to include superannuation, so that it is on the same basis as the 1993–94 figure.
