HL Deb 01 December 1993 vol 550 c39WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the latest information they have about the persons detained in the fortress of Khiam by the South Lebanon Army; and whether access has yet been gained by the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have recently confirmed to us that they are still denied access to Khiam prison by the South Lebanese army and Israeli defence forces. The ICRC estimate that there are currently 211 detainees in Khiam prison. We remain concerned at reports of ill treatment of prisoners in Khiam. These reports have, however, proved extremely difficult to corroborate because of lack of direct access to the prison.
