HC Deb 29 April 1993 vol 223 cc505-6W
Mr. Callaghan

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many complaints he has received about wheel clamping in(a) the United Kingdom and (b) the Greater Manchester area.

Mr. Jack

Since 1 April 1992, the Home Office has received 258 written complaints about wheel clamping on private land, both directly from members of the public arid from hon. Members on behalf of constituents. Of this total, 15 can be identified as originating from the Greater Manchester area.

In the same period, the Home Office has received 20 written complaints about wheel clamping on the public highway, which currently takes place only in London. We are not aware of any complaints from the Greater Manchester area on this issue.

The Home Office issued a consultation document on wheel clamping on private land on 23 February. Comments should reach the Home Office by 30 May.
