HC Deb 29 April 1993 vol 223 c503W
Ms Harman

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the additional revenue, at 1993 prices, resulting from leaving the married couples allowances unchanged in the financial years 1991–92 and 1992–93; and what estimate he has made of the additional revenue which will be generated in the financial years 1993–94, 1994–95 and 1995–96.

Mr. Dorrel

The estimated direct revenue yield for each year compared with tax regimes in which the married couple's allowances had been increased in line with the statutory rules for indexation since 1990–91 are as follows:

Yield in a full year at 1993–94 prices
£ million
1991–92 450
1992–93 600
1993–94 750

Equivalent estimates for 1994–95 and 1995–96 would depend on income levels, changes in the retail prices index, and other aspects of the tax regime for the future years.
