HC Deb 21 April 1993 vol 223 cc115-6W
24. Mr. Gerrard

To ask the President of the Board of Trade how many post offices closed in 1992; and how many he expects to close in 1993.

Mr. Heseltine

I understand from the Post Office that in the years 1991–92 and 1992–93 there were net reductions, through closures, of 148 and 202 post offices respectively. The majority of closures occur when the subpostmaster or subpostmistress retires or resigns and Post Office Counters Ltd. is unable to find a suitable replacement.
