HC Deb 20 April 1993 vol 223 c71W
Mr. Flynn

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is his latest assessment of the percentage of damage and wear to motorways, roads and bridges caused by(a) lorries, (b) other vehicles and (c) other reasons.

Mr. Kenneth Carlisle

For motorways and other roads, the vast majority of damage and wear is caused by vehicles over 1.5 tonnes unladen weight such as heavy goods vehicles, buses and coaches. Damage and wear from motor cars and from other causes including weather and spillages is negligible compared with that from commercial vehicles. Bridges deteriorate for a variety of reasons not necessarily related to traffic. No percentage breakdown is readily available.
