§ Mr. NorrisSome 13 per cent. of London Buses Ltd.'s vehicles are currently beyond their original design life. The majority of these are the popular Routemaster vehicles, with an average age of 28 years. There is a refurbishment programme under way to extend the life of 500 Routemaster vehicles into the next century at a cost of £10 million. All vehicles are regularly maintained to ensure their reliability and continued safe operation. It is not possible to forecast the position for 1996.
§ Mr. DowdTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport how much bus mileage the managing directors of London Buses Ltd. subsidiaries expect to be lost as a result of his Department's proposals for deregulation; and what efforts he has made to maintain the current level of mileage.
§ Mr. NorrisIt is not for me to comment on the views of the managing directors of the subsidiaries of London Buses Ltd.
Upon deregulation we shall establish a central bus authority to ensure that routes which are socially necessary but which are not operated commercially are provided on a subsidised basis. As a guide, deregulation outside London has led to an increase of 20 per cent. in bus mileage.
