To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement about the level of total demand in the economy.

Mr. Portillo

Real domestic demand rose by 0.5 per cent. between 1991 and 1992. The Budget forecast is for it to increase by 1¼ per cent. in 1993 and 3 per cent. in the year to the first half of 1994. These forecasts are within the range of forecasts produced by the Panel of Independent Forecasters and other outside forecasters.
