HC Deb 29 October 1992 vol 212 c800W
Dr. David Clark

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will list all those who are being consulted about the review of United Kingdom naval bases, including both national and international bodies; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

There is no single review of United Kingdom naval bases. A number of measures potentially affecting particular bases are being examined as part of continuing work to match support to a smaller front line. Other Government Departments are consulted as necessary. The trades unions will be consulted on any proposals, and local authorities will have the opportunity to give their views so that all relevant factors can be considered before final decisions are announced.

The provision of support facilities is a national responsibility. NATO authorities are, however, aware of our strategy for ensuring cost-effective support of the Royal Navy.
