To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if she will give the average hourly wage of male manual workers adjusted for inflation, for(a) 1974, (b) 1979, (c) 1983, (d) 1987 and (e) 1990 and 1991, respectively.

The average gross hourly earnings of full-time male manual workers, for each year requested, can be found in table 1 of part A of the "New Earnings Survey" report for that year. The data necessary to adjust these figures for inflation—that is retail prices index, all items—can be found in table 6.4 of theEmployment Gazette for April 1992 and in table 26 of the annual supplement to Economic Trends for April of earlier years. Copies of all these publications are available in the Library.
