HC Deb 26 October 1992 vol 212 cc488-9W
Mr. Leighton

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what percentage of trains are equipped with(a) black box cab data recorders, (b) train radios and (c) automatic train protection devices.

Mr. Freeman

This information is not readily available in the format requested. Information is available as follows:

(a) Data recorders

All trains of type 319, 321, 322 and 456 had data recorders operational by April 1992. Class 442 trains are being equipped under a retro-fit programme clue for completion in 1992–93. New trains are being delivered with data recorders, including class 159, 165 and 465 vehicles.

(b) Train Radios

Driver to base radio is fitted on 85 per cent. of locomotives (including all HST power units) and 56 per cent. of Pacer and Sprinter units. All electric multiple units working in the Strathclyde PTE area are fitted. NSE is reviewing how best to meet the BR board's requirements.

(c) ATP

20 per cent. of HST power units have been fitted with ATP. 33 per cent. of the class 165 trains to be used on the Chiltern lines have fully commissioned ATP, and work is underway on the remainder of these trains. The two pilot schemes are still being evaluated.
