To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the present exchange rate of the pound sterling with(a) the United States dollar and (b) the German mark; and if he will make a statement.

The approximate sterling exchange rates at close of business on Friday, 23 October were US dollars 1.6145 and deutschemark 2.4702 respectively.
