HC Deb 19 October 1992 vol 212 c110W
Mr. Peter Bottomley

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if she will make a statement on her policy on the continuation of wages councils.

Mr. McLoughlin

The Government have made it clear on many occasions that the wages councils have no permanent place in the labour market.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many workers are covered by each of the two largest wages councils.

Mr. McLoughlin

It is estimated that, in March 1992, 736,000 workers were covered by the retail trades (non-food) wages council and 538,000 by the licensed non-residential establishment wages council.
