Quarterly analysis of unemployed claimants

Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many men aged 16 to 64 years were registered as unemployed on 1 May 1992, 1 May 1991 and 1 May 1990 in(a) Blaenau Gwent, (b) Wales and (c) England; how many of them had been unemployed for more than six months and for more than 12 months; how many registered unemployed claimants in (i) Blaenau Gwent, (ii) Wales and (iii) England fail to qualify for unemployment benefit; and if she will present the unemployment figures as a percentage of all economically active males and provide comparable figures for unemployment rates and benefit entitlement for females.

Mr. McLoughlin

The available information is contained in the tables.

Table 3 Unemployed claimants not in receipt of unemployment benefit (not seasonally adjusted)
May 1990 May 1991 May 1992
Wales 62,000 79,000 91,000
Percentage of unemployed claimants 78 per cent 74 per cent 76 per cent
England 920,000 1,256,000 1,617,000
Percentage of unemployed claimants 79 per cent 73 per cent 74 per cent

(i) Figures for the number of claimant unemployed not in receipt of unemployment benefit are produced quarterly for the months of February, May, August and November, and are on the unadjusted basis. These figures are not available by gender or for parliamentary constituency areas.

(ii) Because of slight definitional and methodological differences the figures in the above table do not equate exactly with the figures in tables 1 and 2 relating to the total number of unemployed claimants.

(iii) The above figures include cases where entitlement to unemployment benefit has been exhausted and cases which, on the day of the count, had not been rated for benefit.
