To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on his recent meeting with EC Commissioner Bangermann.

At my meeting with Vice-President Bangemann on 1 September, it was agreed that we should avoid disputes over the interpretation of article 8A of the treaty of Rome and should concentrate instead on practical measures to make it as easy as possible for EC nationals including British citizens to enter and leave the United Kingdom. Discussions with the Commission are continuing.
