§ Mr. MacleanThe 1990 report of the photochemical oxidants review group contains a number of research recommendations. The response of my Department has been to maintain and expand monitoring for nitrogen dioxide and other air pollutants highlighted in the report and to continue work on the atmospheric chemistry of nitrogen oxides and ammonia and on their environmental impacts.
§ Dr. Lynne JonesTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what assessment he has made of the extent of the loss of the ozone layer over the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement on proposals to eliminate ozone-destroying chemicals.
§ Mr. MacleanThe latest estimate of the average depletion of the ozone layer at British latitudes, based on 839W the 1992 World Meteorological Organisation/United Nations Environment Programme scientific assessment of ozone depletion, is 8 per cent. per decade. International negotiations on the control of ozone-depleting substances are currently taking place in Copenhagen.
