HL Deb 23 November 1992 vol 540 c53WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they intend to renew the arrangements under which the United States has stationed nuclear weapons in the United Kingdom.

Viscount Cranborne

Under arrangements made for common defence, the United States has the use of certain bases in the United Kingdom. The Churchill-Truman understanding of 1952 reaffirmed that the use of these bases in an emergency would be a matter for joint decision by Her Majesty's Government and the United States Government in the light of the circumstances prevailing at the time. It is customary for these arrangements to be reaffirmed each time a new British Prime Minister or a new President of the United States takes office.
