To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people were charged with murder or attempted murder in each of the last five years; of those, how many were granted bail; and of those granted bail(a) how many were male and how many female, (b) how many were white and (c) how many were from ethnic minorities.

[holding answer 19 November 1992]: Information on the number of people charged is not collected centrally. Reliable information about the breakdown of remands into bail and custody according to offence is also not available centrally. The information that is collected does not include ethnic origin data.

The table shows the number of people prosecuted for the offences of murder and attempted murder from 1987 to 1991, provisional.
