HL Deb 23 November 1992 vol 540 cc59-60WA
Lord Cocks of Hartcliffe

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, in view of the special nature of the events in Bristol on 16th and 17th July, they will consider giving special grant aid to the Avon and Somerset Police Authority to meet additional policing costs and claims for compensation under the Riot (Damages) Act 1886.

Earl Ferrers

Special payments are considered against the general criteria that the efficiency of the force is seriously threatened and that the expenditure incurred is exceptional and unforeseen. After a meeting with representatives of Avon and Somerset Police Authority on 18th November it was decided that their claim did not meet these strict criteria.
