HC Deb 17 November 1992 vol 214 c169W
21. Mr. Foulkes

To ask the Secretary of State for Education how many of today's universities were polytechnics or colleges in 1979; and what this represents in student numbers.

Mr. Forman

Thirty-six institutions have received approval for university titles following the Further and Higher Education Act 1992. In 1990–91 about 342,000 students were studying at these institutions out of a total of about 1,150,000 higher education students in Great Britain. This represents nearly 30 per cent. of all higher education students in Britain.
