HC Deb 17 November 1992 vol 214 c170W
Ms. Ruddock

To ask the Secretary of State for Education if he will introduce proposals to ensure that students following a law finals course receive a mandatory rather than a discretionary grant.

Mr. Forman

The Education Act 1962 restricts mandatory awards to full-time courses leding to a first degree or comparable qualification, or to the DipHE or HND, and to courses for the initial training of teachers. But the Act also allows for discretionary awards for most other courses, including the postgraduate law finals course. We have no present plans to move that boundary, which would require primary legislation.
