HC Deb 13 November 1992 vol 213 c1008W
Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what information Her Majesty's Government possess on the purpose of the nuclear centre at Moallem Kalayen in Iran; and if he will make a statement on the Government's assessment of the Iranian nuclear programme and its military aspects.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

An IAEA inspection team which visited Iran in February (including the site at Moallem Kalayen) reported that they had found nothing inconsistent with the peaceful application of nuclear energy. Information about particular nuclear facilities which Iran is obliged to provide to the IAEA is held in confidence by the agency. We have noted Iran's statements that her nuclear programme is entirely for peaceful purposes. We are nevertheless concerned by allegations that Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapons programme. We have made clear the importance of Iran, and all other states parties to the NPT, abiding fully by their treaty obligations.
