Mr. Cleland

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what was the total revenue expenditure in each of the English regions by her Department in the years 1990–91 and 1991–92.

Information derived from the 1990–91 annual accounts of regional and district health authorities in England is shown in the table. Figures from 1991–92 accounts will be available later in the year.

Notes:

1. HCHS covers all the services provided or managed by the health authorities concerned including hospital, community health, patient transport (ie ambulance), blood transfusion and other services.

2. The table excludes expenditure by family health services authorities and the special health authorities for the London postgraduate teaching hospitals which, although funded by the Department, is not strictly attributable to particular regions. Expenditure by other special health authorities and bodies comprising the NHS, and expenditure met directly by the Department are generally incurred on a national rather than a regional basis, and are also excluded.
