§ Mr. Colin ShepherdTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many teachers qualified to teach the Japanese language are currently employed by education authorities in the maintained sector and teaching in secondary schools to(a) ordinary level and(b)higher level; and if he will make a statement on the teaching of Japanese in Scottish schools.
§ Lord James Douglas-Hamilton[holding answer 26 October 1992]: The information requested is not held centrally. A small number of Scottish schools teach elementary Japanese as part of Japanese Studies courses. SCOTVEC also offers national certificate modules which include elements of the Japanese language. I have no plans to advise education authorities on the teaching of Japanese to Scottish Certificate of Examination standard, but I believe this is a subject worthy of further consideration, and I will keep it under review.
